The Origins of Thistle Cottage Recordings

Origins, Inspirations and Recording

Thistle Cottage Recordings was set up in 2009 (although I had been making home recordings long before then), as an online home to present various music and art projects that had amassed over the years. The name came about when in a certain frame of mind which this reflected, though not representative of the themes or sounds on all recordings.

The main instruments used are acoustic and electric guitar, keyboards and flute.

My many influences and inspirations include:  70's Rock/Progressive Rock Music; Scottish, English, Irish, Welsh, Breton, French, Scandinavian  Folk/ Folk Rock/ Traditional music;  Baroque, Medieval music;  History;  Literature; Art; Nature...

Along with music, I'm a visual artist (watercolour being my foremost art medium), amateur historian, book and record/music collector...
My intent is for all the recordings to be integral albums, with all elements harmoniously combining; from the original lyrics and music through to the artwork.  All music recordings feature specifically created paintings and designs in the packaging.

My music is usually derived from an expression of interests, environments, devising of scenarios and stories and a highly vivid imagination, gathering ideas from various sources.  My intention has always been to write music with reasonably intelligent, coherent lyrics that often evoke timelessness; being unfettered by the fleeting fashions/trends of the nearly cultureless society of today.  These ideas brew inside my imagination until I'm compelled to develop them and begin pressing the record button, sequestered away with the multitrack recorder, instruments and pages of lyrics, striving to create a semblance of the complexity of the vision in my mind and what I want to produce.  Sometimes I nearly come close to to it!

Recorders used over time, nothing fancy.
